MATERIALS - LASER CUTTING

URBAN DESIGN SYSTEMS HAS A VARIETY OF MATERIALS AVAILABLE FOR LASER CUTTING. IN SUMMARY, OPTIONS ARE AS FOLLOWS...

EXTERNAL APPLICATIONS: We advise using either weathering steel, uncoated aluminium or powder coated aluminium.

INTERNAL APPLICATIONS: We advise using either weathering steel, powder coated mild steel, uncoated aluminium, powder coated aluminum or painted MDF timber.

WEATHERING STEEL

Weathering steel is a construction/engineering-grade steel alloy with enhanced weather resistance capabilities when compared to standard steels. Weathering steel’s copper-rich composition (when exposed to the atmosphere) naturally creates an oxidised ‘rust’ patina forming a protective surface coating which inhibits corrosion. Weathering steel was originally developed in the USA in the 1930’s under the trade name of Cor-Ten and, whilst there are now other manufacturers of equivalent material, Cor-Ten (or Corten) has become the common - if not always correct - industry term when referring to weathering steel.

Whilst typical construction applications for weathering steel include bridges, rolling stock and shipping containers, the distinctive and striking aesthetic qualities have led to it’s increased use in architectural projects. In more recent years, weathering steel has become an ever popular material used in the landscaping palette.

Weathering steel does not need sealing and requires very little maintenance although it is advisable to remove salt build up in coastal conditions. In the early stages of rusting it can cause drip stains but this will stabilize over several months (or such time as it takes for the material to developed it’s all-over protective rust coating) and care should be taken not to rub against the rusted finish as it can stain clothes.

MATERIALS THICKNESSES AVAILABLE: 3mm and 6mm.

MAXIMUM SHEET SIZES AVAILABLE: 2400mm and 3000mm x 1200mm. Sheets up to 4000mm are available but can be subject to extended lead times.

MILD STEEL

Mild steel is a great laser cutting option for painted internal screens or artwork. We do not recommend painted mild steel for exterior uses as any damage to the paintwork will enable rusting to occur and subsequent paint failure. We paint sheets in 2-Pac enamel, which offers a highly durable exterior finish and is available for colour-matching.

MATERIALS THICKNESSES AVAILABLE: 3mm and 6mm.

MAXIMUM SHEET SIZES AVAILABLE:  2400mm x 1200mm and 1500mm x 3000mm

ALUMINIUM

Aluminium is a naturally corrosion resistant and light weight material and is ideally suited for external applications where a painted finish is required. We paint sheets in Dulux® powder coatings which offer a highly durable exterior finish and are available in over 100 colours. If left uncoated, aluminium will naturally oxidise to create a protective coating. It’s appearance will however dull from an original bright look to more of a matt finish.

MATERIALS THICKNESSES AVAILABLE: 3mm and 6mm.

MAXIMUM SHEET SIZES AVAILABLE: 2400mm x 1200mm and 1500mm x 3000mm

In order to extend the effective life of powder coating, a very simple but regular maintenance program should be implemented for the removal of any residues.

MDF TIMBER

MDF timber is a lightweight option for internal dividing screens or artwork. The thickness of the timber available offers an architectural quality to the panels.

MATERIALS THICKNESSES AVAILABLE: 12mm, 18mm, 25mm & 32mm

MAXIMUM SHEET SIZES AVAILABLE: 2400mm x 1200mm and 1500mm x 3000mm

STAINLESS STEEL

For external uses, 316 marine grade is advised, whilst grade 304 is suitable for internal use. Grade 304 when used externally will eventually rust and corrode.

MATERIALS THICKNESSES AVAILABLE: 1.5mm, 2m, 3mm & 6mm.

MAXIMUM SHEET SIZES AVAILABLE: 2400mm x 1200mm and 1500mm x 3000mm
